A Culinary Lover’s Delight
Italy offers a treasure trove of reginal cuisines. As you travel amongst the different regions, you’ll discover new favorite dishes along the way.
Let’s start our journey in Lombardy, the northern region of Italy. Some of the key cities and towns in the region are Milan, Bellagio, Bergamo, Como, Garda and Varenna. This area is known for its risotto, specifically risotto alla Milanese, which is a saffron-infused risotto. Polenta is another must have from this area.
As we travel to the south, we enter the Emilia-Romagna region. Think Bologna, Modena, Parma and Ravenna. This area has introduced the world to some of the most amazing foods. Lasagna, prosciutto di Parma and balsamic vinegar from Modena to name a few.
Our next destination is Tuscany ( my favorite region ). Here we’ll find the cities of Florence, Sienna, Lucca and Pisa. This area is known for its rich stews and soups. Another favorite is panzanella, a delicious bread salad paired with fresh, seasonal veggies. Perhaps the most famous dish is Florentine steak.
Next up is the Campania region, in the southwest portion of the country. Major towns in this region are Naples, Sorrento and the coastal towns along the Amalfi Coast. This area is known for many famous dishes, most notably pizza. Naples is considered the birthplace of pizza. Other classic dishes include the caprese salad and spaghetti con le vongole (spaghetti with clams).
Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or have a more casual palate, the regional cuisines of Italy won’t disappoint. After a long day of sightseeing your taste bud will thank you! Buon appetite!
A Masterpiece Around Every Corner
Italy is an art lover’s paradise, with a literal treasure trove of masterpieces. Art isn’t confined to just museums and galleries. It is everywhere you look. From the awe-inspiring masterpieces adorning the walls of its grand cathedrals, to the well-preserved art found amidst the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the contributions from Italy to the art world are nothing short of extraordinary. Must see works of art include:
- The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci – located at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan
- The Statue of David by Michelangelo – located at the Accademia Gallery in Florence
- The Sistine Chapel Ceiling by Michelangelo – located in Vatican City
- The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli – located at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence
